Cozumel
se ubica a 18 km de la costa oriental de la península de
Yucatán y es la isla habitada más grande de México.Tuvo
ocupación desde principios de nuestra era y fue un importante
centro ceremonial y comercial de los antiguos mayas.Tras la conquista
española quedó despoblada, sin más visitantes
que ocasionales piratas y cazadores de tortugas. Así permaneció
hasta 1852, cuando llegaron colonos de tierra firme que huían
de la Guerra de Castas.
En la década de 1960, el mundo volvió los ojos a Cozumel,
debido sobre todo a los informes del oceanólogo francés
Jacques Costeau acerca de los arrecifes coralinos que la bordean.
Hoy es uno de los sitios de buceo recreativo con más renombre
en el mundo. en las últimas décadas Cozumel se ha
convertido en un punto importante en las rutas de cruceros del Caribe. |

Cozumel
is located at 18 km of the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula
and its the largest inhabited island of Mexico. It's been occupied
since the beggining of our era and was an important ceremonial and
comercial center of the Mayas. With the Spainish conquest it became
depopulated, with no visitors exept ocasional pirates and hunters
of turtles. It remained like this until 1852 when mainland settlers
that where escaping from the war of chaste arrived. In the decade
of 1960, the world returned it's eyes to Cozumel, due to the studies
of the French ocean investigator Jacques Costeau about the coral
reefs that border it.Today, Cozumel has become one of the sites
of recreational diving with more reputation in the world and an
important point in the routes of cruises of the Caribbean. |
